A MESSAGE FROM THE CALHOUN COUNTY COMMISSION TO THE CITIZENS OF CALHOUN COUNTY
As Calhoun County prepares to resume operation of animal control on March 1, 2019, the following items are a representation of the County’s position:
- As required by law, (see ss 3-7A-7), the County is required to provide a suitable pound and impounding officer to address the needs of Calhoun County residents by addressing stray animals
- Spay/Neuter Program – Snip-It Ticket continues as a County sponsored program to assist residents to combat the overpopulation of stray animals. This is a voluntary program as counties cannot enact laws and any mandatory requirements must be authorized at the State level. 636 purchased by county; residents’ cost build = $9,540; total cost of services to be provided = $52,060. Sold 452 through 1/23/2019.
- The County is in the process of staffing positions to operate animal control
- Although State of Alabama law requires animals to be held a minimum of 7 days, it is the intention of the County to hold animals for some additional period of time while rescue/adoption efforts are explored/exhausted
- We invite all certified rescues to partner with the County to find animals loving homes
- We envision a relocated centralized animal control premises, and/or a separate adoption/rescue facility which will be more convenient for residents as well as participating entities
- We hope to work collaboratively with municipalities in addressing animal control
