Phone scams are a common way to defraud our citizens of tens of thousands of dollars. The scammers call, with a number appearing to belong to the Sheriff’s Office. Through internet technology, “internet spoofing” can cause any number to appear as something else. If you want to make sure it is us calling, hang up, and call us back at the number you saw. If YOU dial the number, you will get the real number. The scammers will claim to be an employee of this office, often times with correct names and ranks of real employees. If in doubt, never be afraid to hang up, call us, and verify. The scammer will tell you that you’ve missed court, or you owe fines, or a loved one is in jail, and requesting you bail them out. To pay these fees, the scammer will ask you to send money via a gift card of some sort, Cashapp, CoinStar, or BitCoin. The Sheriff’s Office is in no way involved with the collection of money for fines or releases from jail. Fees would be paid to the court house or to a legitimate bonding company. Please be vigilant, and do not hesitate to call us directly with any questions or concerns.
