Calhoun County, AL – On Friday, June 20, 2025, Calhoun County Sheriff Falon Hurst held a command staff promotion ceremony for three deputies. During his opening remarks, Sheriff Hurst stated, “We are not just here to recognize their past successes, but also to look forward to their future contributions.” He went on later to say, “The individuals being promoted today have not only demonstrated competence and reliability but have consistently shown the ability to lead with vision, mentor those around them, and actively manage complex challenges.”

The first deputy to be called to the podium was Detective Chris Nastally. Sheriff Hurst explained that Nastally had worked for a couple of different local police departments before landing at the Sheriff’s Office. Since his start date with the Sheriff’s Office, Nastally has held the ranks of corporal, sergeant in the patrol bureau, and detective. He also served on both SWAT and CNT (Crisis Negotiation Team), where he received the Medal of Valor after he was struck by a vehicle driven by a suspect they were attempting to execute a high-risk warrant against.
Nastally’s education includes an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice Technology, a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, and a Master’s Degree in Justice Administration. He is currently working towards his PhD and is an adjunct instructor at the university level.
Sheriff Hurst ended with, “We are proud to have the opportunity to have Chris, and to have promoted him to the rank of Lieutenant. Lt. Nastally will provide leadership to the Patrol and Communications Bureaus.”

The next deputy to be called to the podium was Josh Cryar. Cryar started his career with the Marshall County Jail. He then came to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office as a corrections officer. He worked his way to become a patrol deputy, patrol corporal, and detective. He has also served the Sheriff’s Office on the CNT and Honor Guard. Sheriff Hurst jokingly said, “Josh left us for a while for all the money down in Baldwin County working as a police officer and investigator. While there, he was promoted to corporal and sergeant. We’ve been pulling on him ever since he left us. When I applied to the governor to be sheriff, I started leaning harder on him. He told me that if I got it, he’d come back. When I did, he was one of my first calls. “Guess what?” I said to him. Now he is back.”
Cryar served as an MP in the US Army and later as a reservist in the US Air Force. His educational background includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration.
Sheriff Hurst then stated, ” I am pleased to have been able to hire and promote Josh to the rank of Lieutenant, where he will guide our Detective and School Resource Bureaus.”

The third deputy called to the podium was Lieutenant William Moses. The sheriff explained that Moses has “Held about every job we have.” He has been a corrections officer, dispatcher, and deputy. He was promoted to corporal in corrections and patrol, a sergeant in corrections, patrol, and detectives. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant, where he has worked through different divisions. As a lieutenant, Moses has been over patrol, court services, communications, detective, and school resource bureaus. He has also served the sheriff’s office on CNT and is our County Mental Health Officer.
Moses’ educational background includes an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Leadership, and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration. He is also an adjunct instructor at the college level and serves on various boards of directors.
Sheriff Hurst concluded by saying, “So, since we were out of jobs for him to hold, we’ve promoted him to the last one there is, Captain over our Corrections Division.”

Sheriff Hurst also announced that due to these new command staff promotions, there are open positions for the people under the command staff. Corporal Dustin Cason was promoted to sergeant in the patrol bureau, and Deputies Andrew Cavitt and Broady Johnson were promoted to corporal in the patrol bureau.
As the ceremony came to a conclusion, Sheriff Hurst thanked everyone who attended and offered refreshments to anyone who would like to stay after.
