Calhoun County Sheriff issues scam alert about warrants

Calhoun County, AL – The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office has been alerted to a scam that is currently being perpetrated against unknowing residents of the county.  An individual, or individuals, are contacting people via the telephone and identifying themselves as deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and telling them that there is an active warrant for them. They then offer a financial solution to have the warrant “cleared” by paying funds directly to them.

Sheriff Matthew Wade said, “We do not take money from people to have warrants taken care of.” He explained that a warrant is secured by a judge in the court system. Police officers and deputies are utilized to execute a warrant once it is signed by the judge. Sheriff Wade also stated, “If someone thinks they have a warrant they can call our office to confirm it. If they do have a warrant the staff will tell them what they need to do to have the warrant taken care of.” To contact the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office just call (256) 236-6600 and tell the person you would like to check on a possible warrant.

Below is the official press release issued by the Sheriff’s Office via their Facebook page:

“Individuals in our county have received telephone calls reportedly from our office where a Sgt. Starr and Deputy John Roberts declare warrants existed for the caller. We do have a Roberts and Starr that work for our agency, and the callers are also using a name associated with our District Attorney’s Office. However, these are not our people and it’s a scam.

They start out declaring you have a warrant for your arrest and that you need to submit a handwriting sample for analysis. Then they offer a monetary solution for you to send electronically to take care of the problem.

Again this a scam!

We would never ask for money. Second, you can go to our website or app to see if you have a warrant. Third, if you have any doubts call our agency at 256-236-6600.

In today’s technology the scammers can make themselves seem legitimate. Always check before divulging any personal information and never send money to unknown persons especially electronically.

Stay safe!

Sheriff Matthew Wade”
