Calhoun County, AL – Slaton homers twice, Cockrell once as Alexandria finishes 4-2 in Gulf Shores. Cromer hits two of PV’s four homers in victorious Gulf Shores finale. In baseball, Heacock, Gilman hit grand slams as Oxford rolls to area victory. Lemon rolls up five RBIs as Jacksonville scores area victory.

GULF SHORES — Alexandria went 2-1 in the second day of the Gulf Shores Classic on Wednesday, beating Spanish Fort 8-6 and Oswego (Ill.) 10-8 and losing to Hartselle 8-3.

The Valley Cubs (16-7-1) finished 4-2 and in the top eight of a 61-team field.

Against Spanish Fort, Alexandria took the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning and held the Toros scoreless in the bottom of the inning. Charlee Parris’ bunt plus an error scored one run, and Jill Cockrell singled home the other run.

Pressley Slaton homered while going 3-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. She also allowed five hits and four earned runs with six strikeouts in five innings.

Christian Hess singled and had an RBI, and Allyssa Hunt finished with an RBI.

Against Oswego, Slaton went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and four RBIs.

Hess and Parris each had two singles and two RBIs. Cockrell and Brenlee Sparks each had two hits, including a double, and one RBI, and Clancy Bright went 3-for-3 and scored a run.

Hunt doubled and scored a run.

Cockrell hit a two-run homer against Hartselle, and Sparks doubled with an RBI. Hess doubled and scored a run.

PLEASANT VALLEY 14, JAG 3: Madyson Cromer hit two of Pleasant Valley’s four home runs, and the Raiders (7-9) finished their stay in Gulf Shores with a victory over Mongtomery’s Johnson Abernathy Graetz.

Cromer went 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs.

Lily Henry went 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs, and Gracee Ward hit a solo home run while going 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI. Ward also hit two doubles.

Aubree Cromer went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI, and Haylie Lee went 2-for-2 with a double, a run and an RBI.

Lilly Robinson had a single and three RBIs, and Jordan Cheatwood had a single and an RBI.

Baseball

OXFORD 11, PELL CITY 4: In Class 6A, Area 13 play, Forrest Heacock and Hudson Gilman each hit a grand slam as Oxford improved to 15-7.

Heacock’s grand slam came in the third inning, Gilman’s in the fifth. Both had two hits on the day, including a Gilman double.

R.J. Brooks went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and Judd Syer went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Rocco Maniscalco also had an RBI and scored a run.

Brooks got the win, working 3 1/3 innings. He allowed four hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts.

Canaan Whitman allowed five hits and one earned run with one strikeout in 3 2/3 innings.

JACKSONVILLE 17, CLEBURNE COUNTY 5: In 4A, Area 9 play, Xaye Lemon went 3-for-4 with a double, a run and five RBIs as Jacksonville upped to 11-11.

John Ducar went 3-for-3 with a run and three RBIs. Jackson Bonner went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs, and Matthew Salmon 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs.

Drake Loggins had two runs and two RBIs, and Kingston Peeler had two runs and an RBI.

Ducar got the win, working 3 2/3 innings with two hits, no runs and three strikeouts.
