Calhoun County – Alexandria comes back from five-run deficit to beat Cookeville (Tenn.); Oxford doubleheader at Gadsden City postponed to Friday
On day two of Cookeville (Tenn.) High School’s visit to play Alexandria at Choccolocco Park, the Valley Cubs turned the rally caps. Alexandria answered Cookeville’s four-run fourth inning with a four-run fourth of its own, and single runs in the sixth and seventh innings completed the Valley Cubs’ comeback from a 7-2 deficit to win 8-7. Alexandria’s four-run fourth included singles from Samuel Henegar, Ty Brown, Seth Johnson, Aaron Johnson and Brodie Slaton. Aiden Brunner reached on a walk.
In the sixth inning, Deshaun Foster led off with a double, took third base on Aaron Johnson’s sacrifice and scored on Slaton’s single. Eli Barnes led off the seventh with a double and gave way to pinch runner Caleb Folsom, who moved to third on Seth Johnson’s sacrifice fly and scored on a game-ending throwing error on a Slaton grounder. Slaton went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, and Aaron Johnson drove in two runs. Zach Baskins got the win in relief, allowing one hit with three strikeouts and two walks over the final three innings. Alexandria (24-5) won the series opener 7-0 on Wednesday.
Softball
MUNFORD 15, TALLADEGA 0: Khloe Shears pitched a perfect game, striking out eight of the nine batters she faced. Chloe Pickette and Blair Darby had three hits, including Darby’s home run. Tayla Marlow, Kastin Lathem each had two hits and scored three runs. Munford plays at Lincoln on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Postponements
Oxford’s Class 6A, Area 13 doubleheader at Gadsden City was postponed to Friday because of rain. Oxford won the series opener 10-0 on Tuesday. Postponed to Monday were Alexandria’s 5A, Area 10 softball games with Lincoln. Several games originally scheduled for Thursday were played Wednesday in anticipation of rain.
