Calhoun County Under Red Flag Warning: High Fire Risk Alert

Red Flag Warning

Calhoun County, AL – Calhoun County residents are urged to exercise extreme caution today as a Red Flag Warning has been issued for the area. The warning is in effect from noon until 7 PM , signaling highly risky conditions for potential wildfires.

Key Factors:

Winds: Strong southwest winds are forecasted, reaching speeds of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts of up to 25 mph. These gusty winds can significantly increase the rate at which fires spread.

Relative Humidity:  The air in Calhoun County is expected to be remarkably dry, with humidity levels as low as 22 percent. Dry air dries out vegetation, making it more susceptible to ignition.

Impact and Precautions:

The combination of strong winds and arid air sets the stage for a heightened risk of wildfires. It is strongly advised to refrain from any outdoor burning activities during this period.

In simpler terms, a Red Flag Warning serves as an alert that the region faces an elevated risk of wildfires due to the perfect storm of dry conditions and brisk winds. The warning indicates that warm temperatures, very low humidity, and increased wind speeds could contribute to an enhanced danger of fires.

In light of the Red Flag Warning, residents are encouraged to take specific precautions:

  • If you are authorized to burn in your area, ensure that all burn barrels are covered with a weighted metal cover, featuring holes no larger than 3/4 of an inch.
  • Refrain from discarding cigarettes or matches from moving vehicles, as they can easily ignite dry grass along roadways, sparking a wildfire.
  • Properly extinguish all outdoor fires. Immerse fires in an ample amount of water and thoroughly stir to guarantee they are completely cold to the touch. When dealing with charcoal, submerge it in water until it is no longer hot. Never leave live charcoal on the ground unattended.
  • Never leave a fire without supervision. Even the tiniest sparks or embers have the potential to drift into nearby leaves or grass, igniting a fire that can rapidly spread.

The Red Flag Warning is a call to be extra cautious and vigilant during this period, prioritizing safety and minimizing activities that could inadvertently lead to destructive fires. Local authorities and firefighting teams are on high alert, ready to respond swiftly should any wildfires ignite.
