JACKSONVILLE — The heat is on as Calhoun County’s firefighters and police officers prepare to face off in the 2nd Annual Smoke Eaters Chili Challenge. The event will take place on Saturday, September 13, at the Jacksonville Community Center.
The competition invites the public to enjoy a day of food and friendly rivalry between first responders. Entry to attend is $10 per person, while chili teams can register for $25. Active duty police and fire representatives may enter their chili at no cost. A blind judging panel will determine the official winner, with the trophy awarded to the agency whose chili takes top honors for the year.
This year’s judges include Jacksonville City Council President Tony Taylor, Oxford Police Sergeant Jeremy McCorkel, and Anniston Fire Assistant Chief Brandon Connell. Alabama State Senator Keith Kelley will serve as the emcee for the event. Attendees will also have the chance to vote for their favorite chili, adding a community voice to the competition.
Last year, the Piedmont Police Department secured the inaugural trophy. As they prepare to defend their title, the big question remains: will they repeat as champions, or will the firefighters claim bragging rights this year?
Proceeds from the Smoke Eaters Chili Challenge will directly benefit Calhoun County law enforcement and first responders. Those interested in entering the contest can sign up online at ccblueline.org/smoke-eaters-chili-challenge/sign-up-form.
