Calhoun County, AL – In an announcement made through the official Calhoun County Facebook page, authorities revealed that the iconic covered bridge on Alexandria-Wellington Road has been closed indefinitely due to safety concerns. The closure, effective immediately, is aimed at addressing the ongoing safety issues associated with the landmark.

Residents and commuters who regularly use the Alexandria-Wellington Road were advised to plan alternative routes, as the closure may impact travel times. Officials are urging individuals to allocate extra time for their daily commute and adjust their schedules accordingly.

The decision to close the covered bridge, a local landmark with historical significance, is part of an ongoing effort to prioritize safety and maintain the integrity of the infrastructure. The Highway Department did note that the bridge is not technically considered historic; however many in the community do still consider it so. Commission Terry Howell spoke with the Calhoun Journal, shedding light on the persistent safety concerns that prompted this closure. The bridge had been under frequent monitoring for months, and six weeks ago, weight limit signs were installed, restricting the bridge to 3000 lbs.

Commission Howell, expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the closure and emphasized that safety is the top priority. He revealed that he personally spoke to several residents in the vicinity of the bridge prior to its closure, acknowledging that while the closure wasn’t a surprise, most residents are eager to see the bridge reopened.

In discussions with the Highway Department and County Engineer, Rodney McCain, Commissioner Howell is exploring options for reopening the bridge. The leading suggestion at the moment is the construction of a concrete bridge, which would eliminate weight concerns associated with the current structure. The estimated cost of this replacement is substantial, currently standing at 3.5 million dollars.

Commissioner Howell, while advocating for the replacement of the bridge, emphasized the need for a responsible approach. He stated that promises regarding such a significant expense cannot be made without considering the budget and seeking approval from all Commissioners.
