FRIDAY’S GIRLS SCORES
Handley 56, Anniston 40
Jacksonville 55, Ashville 32
Ohatchee 53, Munford 21
Piedmont 47, Pleasant Valley 41
JACKSONVILLE – When Piedmont’s bigs get involved, the Lady Bulldogs are aa force to be reckoned with.
Lele Ridley and Z’Hayla Walker both had big games Friday as Piedmont stopped Pleasant Valley 47-41 leaving everyone in the area with one loss.
Ridley had 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Walker had 14 points and a half-dozen rebounds.
When they’re on, coach Terrace Ridley said, the results are “awesome.”
“We know if our opponent can’t guard our two big posts then they’re going to be in trouble,” she said. “We knew it was going to be a mismatch today and when they get going and they’re scoring it’s going to be a good game.”
The pace of the game was markedly different from Tuesday’s Ohatchee-Piedmont game. The Lady Bulldogs lost under a barrage of 3-pointers and indifferent play.
The game was tied after the first quarter, but then the Lady Bulldogs exerted themselves and outscored their hosts 23-12 over the next two quarters to take control. They ran the lead to 17 in the fourth quarter before PV started to rally.
Ridley had seven points and eight rebounds as Piedmont pulled away and Walker had eight points.
Coach Ridley said a raised intensity level was the difference between Tuesday’s loss and Friday’s win.
“These girls knew they got down one in the area and they knew they had to get this win to get back up and give ourselves a chance to be in the race again,” Ridley said. “They felt down and sat around about it, but they got after it the last few days of practice. They knew they had to bring up that intensity level and get after them.”
