December 2023 Non-Profit Spotlight
Calhoun County, AL – In the heart of Alabama’s Calhoun County, the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the Cheaha Region tirelessly champions the rights and well-being of children who have endured the harsh realities of abuse and neglect. Their mission is clear – to be the unwavering voice for these vulnerable youngsters, providing them with dedicated volunteers who advocate for their best interests in family courts.
CASA of the Cheaha Region extends its reach across St. Clair, Talladega, and Calhoun counties, weaving a safety net for abused, neglected, or abandoned children. Trained volunteers, recruited and guided by a committed team of professionals, collaborate with judges, lawyers, and social workers to ensure these children navigate the complexities of the court, child welfare, and foster care systems.
The organization’s vision is ambitious yet heartfelt – to serve every child in the Cheaha Region, offering them the support and care they deserve. At the core of their efforts lies the commitment to achieving “substantial equality of population” across the four Wards, reflecting the essence of fair representation.

CASA invites compassionate individuals to embark on a transformative journey as volunteer advocates. By dedicating time, building relationships, and actively engaging in the lives of these children, volunteers become the eyes and ears of the court. Responsibilities include ensuring access to essential services, accompanying children to court, and advocating for their needs and rights.
To join this noble cause, volunteers must commit several hours each month for at least one year, effectively communicate, undergo comprehensive training, and pass background checks. The result is a cadre of advocates who embody the principles of justice, equality, and unwavering support for the vulnerable.
For those unable to become volunteer advocates, CASA provides alternative avenues to contribute to their cause:
1. Non-Advocate Volunteer Opportunities: Individuals can support CASA through various non-advocate volunteer roles, from administrative tasks to organizing events.
2. Financial Contributions: CASA encourages tax-deductible donations, enabling them to advocate for more children in need. Contributions can be made individually, supplemented by employer matching gifts, or in memory/honor of loved ones.
3. Event Sponsorship: CASA hosts fundraising events, such as “A Noble Claus for CASA.” Individuals and businesses can sponsor these events at different levels to support the cause and enjoy various benefits.
