Rainbow City, AL – In recognition of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, the Challenger Learning Center of Northeast Alabama has announced a regional academic challenge for middle school students. The competition invites students to identify and defend what they believe is the greatest American STEM invention or innovation developed over the past 250 years.
The initiative allows the Challenger Learning Center to participate in the America250 Alabama celebration by encouraging young learners to explore the nation’s history through the lens of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program is designed to inspire students to examine how American discoveries have influenced the world while promoting conversations among educators, families, and communities about the innovations that continue to shape modern life.
The competition is open to students in grades 5 and 6 who live within the Center’s 12-county service area, including Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, DeKalb, Etowah, Jefferson, Marshall, Randolph, Talladega, and St. Clair counties. Participants will research American contributions in STEM fields from the past two and a half centuries, select what they believe to be the most significant invention or innovation, and defend their choice using three well-reasoned justifications.
According to Dr. Farrah Hayes, Executive Director of the Challenger Learning Center of Northeast Alabama, the anniversary presents a unique opportunity to connect students with the nation’s legacy of innovation. Hayes said the goal of the competition is to encourage critical thinking while highlighting the many ways American STEM achievements have advanced communities, the nation, and the global landscape.
Each student may submit one entry to the competition. Public school, private school, and homeschool students are all eligible to participate, and schools may submit an unlimited number of student entries.
Eight winners will be selected by a panel of judges across four STEM categories—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—in both the fifth and sixth grades. Each winning student will receive a $50 award and will be recognized at the Challenger Learning Center booth during the Rainbow City Drone Show scheduled for June 27, 2026.
