Chief Ladiga Trail Extension: Progress Update

Chief Ladiga Trail Progress Update!

Anniston, AL – Significant progress has been made on Anniston’s extension of the Chief Ladiga Trail since the groundbreaking in April 2024. From November 4 to December 4, B&B and its subcontractors have achieved several milestones, moving closer to completing the 6.5-mile addition to this iconic trail. Once finished, the Chief Ladiga Trail will become part of the nation’s longest paved pedestrian pathway, spanning over 105 miles and connecting Alabama to Georgia’s Silver Comet Trail.

Throughout November, B&B focused on grading operations near 47th Street. This involved removing unsuitable materials and replacing them in targeted areas to ensure a stable foundation. The base subgrade for the trail’s remaining sections was also completed, setting the stage for paving operations to resume in the near future.

Progress on bridge crossings continues to gain momentum:

  • 11th Street Crossing: X-Roads Construction began excavation for the bridge abutments. Preparations are now complete, with concrete pouring scheduled this week.
  • Cane Creek Crossing: B&B started work on a stable crane pad, essential for safely setting the bridge in this location.
  • 4th Street Crossing: Crews backfilled around abutments poured in October, advancing this vital segment of the project.

In a crucial breakthrough, the City of Anniston coordinated the removal of old railroad equipment, a previous obstacle to construction. This successful effort has cleared the way for continued work on the trail.

Once completed, the extension will link Anniston’s Multimodal Amtrak Station to the trail network extending into Georgia, enhancing regional connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists. The Chief Ladiga Trail extension is set to strengthen Anniston’s role as a key hub in this historic pathway.
