Anniston, AL – The latest developments on the Chief Ladiga Trail expansion project are making significant strides. In August 2024, B&B Developers have advanced the grading phase, marking key progress in the project.
Progress Highlights:
Grading and Base Work: B&B Developers have successfully placed a crushed aggregate base from Michael Tucker Park to Blue Mountain Road. At Blue Mountain Road, reddish-brown sandy clay was added to bring the subgrade up to the desired elevation. This material has compacted well, providing a stable foundation for future paving.
Addressing Subgrading Issues: During the construction phase, B&B Developers encountered unsuitable material near Blue Mountain Road. This material, previously used as backfill for a sewer main, was excavated and replaced with stone to ensure a more stable base for the trail.
Temporary Access and Clean Roads: To minimize dirt and mud tracking onto roadways, B&B Developers have installed temporary entrances for trail access during construction. ALDOT #1 stone has been placed at these points to keep the area clean and safe.
Bridge Construction: The initial phase of bridge construction has begun with the installation of helical piers at Cane Creek and 4th Street. These piers will serve as the foundation for the new bridge abutments. Additionally, a sinkhole near the north end of the concrete bridge was excavated, revealing remnants of an old railroad timber that had deteriorated over time.
Project Overview:
The Chief Ladiga Trail extension will add 6.5 miles to the existing trail, bringing its total length to approximately 39.5 miles. Upon completion, the trail will connect Anniston’s Multimodal Amtrak Station to Georgia’s Silver Comet Trail, forming the longest paved pedestrian pathway in the United States at over 105 miles.
