City of Anniston Seeks Applicants for Planning, Zoning and Historic Preservation Boards

ANNISTON, AL — The City of Anniston is seeking residents and other qualified Calhoun County applicants to fill openings on three city boards and commissions: the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustments and Anniston Historic Preservation Commission.

According to information released by the city, applicants whose primary residence is within the Anniston city limits are eligible to apply. Individuals living elsewhere in Calhoun County may also be considered if they have professional expertise relevant to one or more of the boards. Prospective applicants are encouraged to attend meetings of the board on which they are interested in serving before submitting an application.

The Planning Commission currently has two openings. The commission meets on the second Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at Anniston City Hall. Its responsibilities include advising on citywide planning and land-use matters and helping guide implementation of the city’s comprehensive plan.

The Zoning Board of Adjustments has seven openings, according to the city’s recruitment materials. The board meets as needed at Anniston City Hall. It considers requests for special exceptions and zoning variances as well as appeals involving administrative decisions related to the city’s zoning ordinance. Decisions of the board are final, subject to review by the courts.

The Anniston Historic Preservation Commission has four to five openings. The commission works on the designation, protection, preservation and rehabilitation of historic properties and districts. It also makes recommendations to the City Council concerning potential historic properties and districts and conducts educational programs related to historic preservation.

The city’s recruitment materials state that the Historic Preservation Commission meets on the third Thursday of each month at 8:30 a.m. The city’s website currently lists the meeting location as the Anniston City Meeting Center at 1615 Noble Street.

Those interested in serving can complete a City of Anniston Board Application and submit it to the Office of the City Manager. Applications may be emailed to citymanager@annistonal.gov. Additional information is available by calling 256-624-5860.
