Community Heroes and Student Achievements Honored at Calhoun County Commission Meeting

County Commision

CALHOUN COUNTY, AL – The Calhoun County Commission held its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 10:00 A.M., drawing a strong turnout from community members eager to engage in local governance.

The meeting began with a call to order and an invocation led by Commissioner Wilson, who reflected on the importance of guidance and unity. Attendees then joined in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Recognizing Alexandria High School Robotics Teams

A key highlight of the morning was the formal recognition of the Alexandria High School Robotics Teams, 20605A and 20605B, for their outstanding accomplishments during the 2025 season.

  • Team 20605A: Davis Stone (Senior – Robot Engineer), Eldrin Sani (Junior – Programmer/Driver), and Brie Peavy (Senior – Notebook/Scouting) earned accolades including Tournament Champion at the 2025 Calhoun County Robotics Tournament.

  • Team 20605B: Lane Webb (Junior – Driver/Builder), Bradyn Thacker (Junior – Programmer), Dawson Stone (Freshman – Designer), and Avery Pair (Junior – Notebook/Scouting) were also crowned Tournament Champions at multiple events.

Commissioners commended the students for their talent, teamwork, and dedication, wishing them continued success in upcoming competitions.

Proclamations

Two proclamations were presented:

  • National Community College Month: April was officially recognized as National Community College Month. Dr. Kathy Murphy and Gadsden State Community College representatives were honored for their contributions to education, workforce training, and community service.

  • Heroic Recognition for Ryder Greenwood: The Commission honored 11-year-old Ryder Greenwood of White Plains for his bravery in protecting a friend from an aggressive dog. Ryder sustained serious injuries during the act and was celebrated for his courage with a proclamation and the title of Junior Deputy.

Commission Business

  • Agenda and Minutes: The Commission unanimously approved the meeting agenda and minutes from the previous session.

  • Old Business: Several nuisance abatement issues were discussed, including properties in Jacksonville, Anniston, and Ohatchee. The Commission voted to uphold or dismiss cases based on compliance updates.

  • New Business:

    • Approval of AIA Change Order #5 related to jail additions for a new Mental Health/Medical Unit.

    • Resolution to cancel an existing vendor agreement with Quill.

    • Authorization for municipal election service contracts across the county.

    • Proposed agreement with Whorton Engineering to upgrade HVAC systems at the EMA/911 Operations Center.

    • Appointments were made to the McClellan Development Authority Board and the Transit Authority.

Community Participation

During public comments, several residents addressed the Commission:

  • Jacob Williamson promoted the upcoming State of Law Enforcement event on May 23 at the Oxford Civic Center, encouraging public participation and dialogue.

  • Mike Webb shared positive news about recent student achievements in the Calhoun County School System.

The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote to adjourn. The next Commission meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 8, 2025, at 10:00 A.M.

Commissioners thanked the public for their continued engagement and reaffirmed their dedication to addressing the needs of Calhoun County residents.
