Mental Health Event

Calhoun County, AL – Calhoun County recently played host to the “Aloha to Better Mental Health” event, held at EXCEL Academy (formerly known as Saks Middle School) on May 3rd from 5:00-7:30 PM. The event, aimed at promoting mental health awareness and well-being, witnessed a remarkable turnout and garnered widespread community support.

Attendees were greeted by local mental and medical providers, along with numerous community partners, who generously distributed valuable resources and information. The event’s objective extended beyond mental health alone, encompassing physical and social well-being, emphasizing the interconnectedness of these facets of health.

The gathering served as a platform for various stakeholders to come together and pool resources for the betterment of the community. Among the notable participants were local counseling providers, pediatricians, home health agencies, non-profits, hospitals, mental health advocates, chiropractors, and many more.

Noteworthy contributions came from organizations such as Evelyn Moon Children’s Services, United Way Helping Families Initiative Team, and Calhoun County’s Children’s Policy Council, whose substantial support significantly enhanced the event’s impact.

A highlight of the evening was the provision of CEU/PD sessions by esteemed counseling providers like Wes Wiginton from Cheaha Counseling, Susan Howell from Highland Health, Giselle Sharp with Giselle Sharp Counseling, and Katie Hurley from Headquarters Counseling and Coaching Services.

The event also featured engaging activities, including a family engagement sensory workshop conducted by school social workers, where children had the opportunity to create their own “ocean in a bottle” and learn about breathing techniques for emotional regulation.

Generous donations from local businesses such as Top O’ the River Anniston, CD Cellar, Fervently Grounded Coffee, and Summer Welch, a local massage therapist, added to the excitement with door prizes for attendees.

Food and refreshments were provided by Main Squeeze Lemonade, Kona Ice, and Sonic, further enhancing the overall experience for participants.

Crucial to the event’s success was the financial support provided by the Coosa Valley RC&D Council, which awarded a $10,000 grant. This funding facilitated the organization of the event, as well as the creation of a “Serenity Garden” and “Cool Down Room” at EXCEL Academy, and professional development opportunities for teachers and staff in areas of classroom management and behavioral health.

Expressing gratitude for the overwhelming community support, organizers emphasized the collaborative efforts that continue to uplift and empower children and families in Calhoun County. The event underscored the spirit of unity and compassion that prevails within the community, fostering a brighter future for all.
