County Commision Honors The Arc of Calhoun and Cleburne Counties and Hears from Alabama PALS Regarding Spring Cleanup at Commision Meeting

    • Patty Tiller with The Arc of Calhoun and Cleburne Counties was joined by Kim Boone and Barbara Johnson. Ms. Tiller also stated how much she appreciated the support she has received from the commissioners as individuals and as a group. She also thanked Commissioner Shears who is a former board member of the Arc.

WHEREAS, intellectual and developmental disabilities are conditions which affect millions of Americans and thousands of Alabamians and their families; and

WHEREAS, public awareness and education enhance a community’s understanding of the issues affecting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities; and

WHEREAS, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can be vital and vibrant members of our communities, improving the quality of life for all of us; and

WHEREAS, the month of March has been designated National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, with many members and chapters of The Arc of the United States, and several members and local chapters of The Arc of Alabama undertaking public awareness, educational, and fundraising initiatives; and

WHEREAS, The Arc of Calhoun and Cleburne Counties continues to work in our community serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities; and

WHEREAS, The Arc of the United States is the largest national volunteer-based membership organization and The Arc of Alabama is the largest state volunteer-based membership organization working to include all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in every community;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Calhoun County Commission, all members concurring, hereby proclaims March 2022, as DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH in Calhoun County, and urges all citizens to give full support of efforts toward enabling all individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live full and productive lives of inclusion in our communities.County Commission

      • This is an appointment for the unexpired term of Mrs. Barbara Walters who passed in January. The new appointment to replace is Jon Garlick.
  • Public Comments
    • Audrey Maxwell from the Chamber of Commerce spoke about the ecumenic Forum that was held at JSU and the many upcoming events at Choccolocco Park in Oxford as well as the Shamrock Run. She said there were lots of events coming up.
    • Tina Dunbar with Alabama PALS spoke about the upcoming April Cleanup Alabama campaign. She also mentioned that Earth Day is coming up on April 22, 2022. Commissioner Patterson stated that volunteers are critical to this process working. He also mentioned that the commission is working to bring in a 3rd party to sweep the major thoroughfares in the county and he also working with the Sheriff on this project. Commissioner Shears mentioned that the adopt a mile program is an important part of the cleanup project as well. Commissioner Hess mentions nth possibility of community pickup spots in Alexandria and Jacksonville that may aid in this project as well.
    • Dr. West spoke about the Master Gardner event that was recently held. They had 45 people attend an it was  a great event.
    • Myles Chamblee with the Calhoun County EMA confirmed that in the past seven days there were 23 new reported cases of COVID and in the past 14 days only 58 cases. RMC currently has 2 people admitted with COVID and they have closed the COVID unit.
    • Ed Turner with the water department thanked the commission for their support and also mentioned that they will soon be taking bids for the new Wellborn water tank project.
    • Patty Tiller with the Arc of Calhoun and Cleburne Counties spoke to remind everyone that on March 21st it is Down Syndrome Awareness and they are encouraging everyone to wear “loud” socks or bright and mismatched socks.
    • Commissioner Shears mentioned the events happening that day as well as the Janney Furnace event at the end of the month. Commissioner Henderson stetted there would be two bands and she would be clogging.
