County Commission Prepares to Say Goodbye to Janice Howard at Commission Meeting 3/24/2022

  • Special Announcement
    • Janice Howard has kept the commission running smoothly for 29 years. Her retirement was officially announced at this meeting. Her last day will be at the end of this month. Her family gathered to see her honored. She stated there were lots of good memories. Commission Chairman Lee Patterson said that Janice always worked to make the commission look good even when they didn’t look good. He also said how much he personally appreciates her and wishes her the best of luck. The commission presented Mrs. Howard with a gift of a plaque and a Larry K. Martin art piece as well as a card with some personal messages. Ken Joiner came to speak on his experience working with Janice and what an asset she has always been. He also said that Janice is the epitome of knowing what you do, believing in what you are doing, and loving what you do. He also said that he loves her and wished her good luck. Commissioner Henderson said she couldn’t imagine better words. Commission Hess recounted a memory where he was lost as to how to handle a situation when he first started and her notes and “script” saved him that time and countless times afterward. Commissioner Wilson loved the playful names she has called him over the years such as “Mr. Amazing” he also noted how much she will be missed. Commissioner Shears said that there is nothing better then being loved and respected by the people who know you best. Chairman Patterson ended things with stressing how much she will be missed.

    • Courthouse Annex Resolution – Unanimously Approved
      • This resolution will also add 1201 Gurnee Ave
    • Alabama Tourism Legislative Grant Application Resolution – Unanimously Approved
      • This grant application is for $7,800 to promote out of state tourism.
    • Alabama Recreational Trails Program Resolution – Unanimously Approved
    • ARPA Funds Resolution – Renovations to County Jail – Unanimously Approved
    • Cane Creek Community Gardens Rules – Unanimously Approved
      • Submitted from the extension office with park rules and expectations.
  • Public Comments
    • Kim Boyd with the Chamber of Commerce spoke to present Janice Howard with a chamber coins to community excellence and also to give her a gift bag.
    • Mark Tyner spoke to thank Janice for making his job easier and for just always being there.
    • Mellisa with the Common Finance Department stated how she always looked to Janice for help and guidances and said how much she will be missed.
    • Gloria Floyd stated how much Janice would be missed.
    • Commission Shears wanted to remind everybody of the House 40 Candidate Forums being hosted by the city of Oxford and the Calhoun County Journal on April 7, 2022. The event starts at 6:30 pm at the Oxford Performing Arts Center and all eight candidates have committed to attend. He also mentioned the Senate Forums held in Jacksonville that were standing room only so this is sure to be a populate event!
