Calhoun County, AL – Released from the Calhoun County Commission
The Calhoun County Commissioners, County Attorney and County Administrator were notified of claims of unethical and possibly illegal treatment of dogs euthanized by the County’s Animal Control Facility.
The Animal Control Director resigned on June 23, shortly after being confronted with the allegations. Another employee named in the claim also resigned after being confronted with the allegations. The County has been informed that an investigation has been initiated to find out if criminal charges are warranted for the former director, who conducted euthanizations, and staff members, who allegedly euthanized animals without proper certification. Allegations have been brought by former employees that an older method of euthanization (injecting sodium pentobarbital directly in the heart, without prior sedation) has been routinely used. Current standard of care for euthanization is to sedate the animal first, then inject sodium pentobartital through a vein.
“We are quite honestly shocked and saddened,” said Chairman Lee Patterson. “Citizens of Calhoun County deserve to know that animals under the care of the County will receive humane treatment, and that the laws and codes governing animal control practices will be upheld.” The County Commission is in full cooperation with the pending investigation in hopes to not only provide justice, but also ensure policies and procedures are improved to prevent such occurrences in the future.
