Renowned folklorist and musician, Joyce Cauthen, will lead the event titled “WAY DOWN IN ALABAM: Finding Old-Time Fiddlers and Their Tunes.” This captivating presentation will delve into the roots of old-time fiddling in Alabama, exploring the musicians who shaped the genre and the enduring popularity of their music.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the early fiddles of Alabama and the distinctive styles of the musicians who played them. Joyce Cauthen will provide insights into the use of instruments such as the banjo, “straws,” and guitar in accompanying fiddle performances, offering a glimpse into the vibrant musical traditions of the region.

One of the highlights of the event will be a special demonstration by fiddler Jim Cauthen, who will showcase traditional fiddle tunes that have been preserved in historical writings, slave narratives, and early newspapers of Alabama.
