Munford, AL – The town of Munford was packed with excitement and laughter on Friday night as the community gathered in the gym for the second annual Donkey Basketball Game. With a full crowd and high energy, the event offered a unique and hilarious twist on the classic sport—replacing sneakers with hooves and swapping fast breaks for unpredictable trots.
“This is our second year to have a donkey basketball game,” said one enthusiastic organizer. “It’s a big success, and I’m proud of everybody. A lot of thought goes into preparing for it.”
Players from the community saddled up—some more bravely than others—and did their best to dribble, shoot, and ride their way to victory atop their stubborn and spirited four-legged teammates. Not everyone was eager to mount a live donkey again, though. One participant proudly held up a cardboard donkey, joking, “This is the only donkey I’m willing to ride.”
For one brave returner, the experience this year was quite the ride—literally. “Last year I just sat on the donkey, but this time I had one that ran a lot more. I’m hurting now, and I know I’ll hurt tomorrow,” they said, laughing. “But it was a lot of fun. Events like this are a great way to bring the community together.”
Even those who opted out of riding this year stayed involved. One participant who refereed instead of riding shared, “I did ride last year. It was a lot of fun, but I’ve got a feeling I’ll wake up with fewer bruises tomorrow!”
As for the donkeys themselves, one veteran of the court stood out. “That little gray one was the meanest one out there,” a referee shared. “Apparently, that donkey is ten years old. It’s had its time on the court, and tonight, it clearly didn’t want any part of it!”
Despite the bumps, bruises, and stubborn donkeys, the night was filled with laughter, community spirit, and unforgettable moments. Or, as one participant humorously put it, “The next time you’re stuck in traffic and not moving, just remember—it could be worse. You could be on a donkey that doesn’t move, in the middle of a basketball court.”
From all reports, Munford’s Donkey Basketball Game was another slam dunk—of fun, that is.
