Dr. Arup Ghosh of Jacksonville State University Elected Chair of IEEE Alabama Section for 2025-2026

Jacksonville, AL – Dr. Arup Ghosh, an associate professor of computer science at Jacksonville State University (Jax State) and a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), has been elected Chair of the IEEE Alabama Section for the 2025-2026 term. A distinguished leader in technology and education, Dr. Ghosh’s appointment reflects his extensive contributions to the IEEE community and his dedication to advancing innovation and professional growth throughout Alabama.

“As Chair, I aim to build upon the strong foundation of the IEEE Alabama Section to further support our members and student branches across the state,” Dr. Ghosh shared. “I want to inspire more individuals to engage with IEEE and contribute to advancements in technology, society, and education.”

IEEE, with over 460,000 members across 190 countries, serves as a global hub for technological innovation and professional development. The Alabama Section, under Dr. Ghosh’s leadership, encompasses members statewide, including active student branches at institutions such as the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Auburn University, and Jax State.

Dr. Ghosh’s leadership has earned him multiple accolades, including the Engineering Council of Birmingham (ECOB) Educator of the Year Award and the IEEE Alabama Educator of the Year Award. Reflecting on these honors, Dr. Ghosh said, “It is humbling to receive these awards, which are a testament to the incredible support I’ve received from colleagues, students, and the IEEE community. My passion has always been to nurture the next generation of engineers and researchers, and these recognitions motivate me to continue that work.”

Beyond his upcoming role as Chair, Dr. Ghosh holds several key positions within IEEE, including Chair of the IEEE Alabama Computer Society, IEEE Region 3 Technical Activities Coordinator, and member of the IEEE Region 3 Operational Audit Committee.

Dr. Ghosh has made a profound impact at Jax State, notably establishing the university’s IEEE Student Branch in 2023. Under his guidance, the branch was recognized with the IEEE Region 3 Exemplary Student Branch Award for exceptional leadership and administration.

“The students at Jax State have shown exceptional dedication and creativity,” Dr. Ghosh noted. “Their enthusiasm for learning and innovating inspires me every day, and it’s a privilege to mentor them as they explore the endless possibilities in engineering and technology.”

Dr. Ghosh’s mentorship has led students to significant achievements, including winning the Entrepreneur Pitch Competition at the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and awards for research presentations at IEEE SoutheastCon and the Jax State Student Symposium.

Additionally, Dr. Ghosh revitalized Jax State’s UPE Honor Society for Computing and Information Disciplines and contributed to academic competitions such as the IEEE Xtreme programming competition and the Congressional App Challenge for Alabama’s 3rd Congressional District.

Dr. Ghosh leads the Human-Technology Interaction Research Lab at Jax State, which focuses on areas such as online safety and digital youth. His research has been published in prominent conferences, including ACM CHI and ACM CSCW.

His dedication to fostering innovation is further reflected in his recent induction into the IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) Honor Society, recognizing his leadership and contributions to engineering and technology.

Dr. Ghosh expressed his aspirations for the IEEE Alabama Section, stating, “I am passionate about giving back to society, and IEEE provides an incredible platform to make that possible. It allows me to connect with like-minded individuals committed to technology, society, and humanity. I look forward to using my role as Chair to continue making a meaningful impact on the Alabama Section, IEEE Region 3, and beyond.”

Dr. Ghosh’s appointment as Chair of the IEEE Alabama Section not only highlights his remarkable achievements but also reinforces Jax State’s commitment to excellence in education, research, and professional development.
