Jacksonville, AL – Jacksonville State University is proud to announce that Dr. Chris McCollough, Professor of Public Relations and Advertising and the Ayers Family Endowed Chair of Journalism and Mass Communication, has been elected to serve on the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC). This esteemed 25-member body is responsible for the formal review and approval of accreditation for journalism and mass communication programs worldwide.
Dr. McCollough’s election comes from a nomination by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), which boasts a membership of 1,700 educators and scholars. His election highlights his growing reputation as an expert in assessment and accreditation, particularly following the successful revamp and reaffirmation of the Department of Communication at Jacksonville State in 2023. His three-year term will begin in October 2024 and conclude in the summer of 2027.
“I am deeply honored to serve on behalf of AEJMC’s diverse group of scholars and educators to ensure we maintain the highest standards for quality teaching, learning, and research in our fields,” Dr. McCollough stated. “This role reflects the hard work our unit has done here at Jacksonville State University, and I intend to represent them well in the work ahead.”
The ACEJMC conducts annual reviews of 15 to 30 academic programs, assessing their accreditation or reaffirmation through comprehensive self-study reports and evaluations from on-site review teams. The council’s goal is to ensure that accredited programs foster industry-relevant practices, promote the professional development of students, and facilitate degree-relevant employment opportunities after graduation.
Currently, there are 120 accredited programs in journalism and mass communication globally, including Jacksonville State’s Department of Communication. Dr. McCollough’s new role on the ACEJMC underscores the university’s commitment to maintaining high standards in education and preparing students for successful careers in the ever-evolving media landscape.
