Gadsden, AL — Dr. Kathy Murphy, president of Gadsden State Community College, has recently earned two significant accolades: her selection into the prestigious Leadership Alabama program and her recognition as a Troy University Distinguished Alumni of the Year. These honors highlight her exceptional leadership, dedication to education, and service to her community.
Dr. Murphy expressed deep appreciation for the recognitions, stating, “I’m honored to be a part of Leadership Alabama and to be recognized by my alma mater. Any success I have achieved reflects the incredible mentors, colleagues, and friends who have supported and inspired me along the way. These honors are as much a tribute to them as they are to me.”
As one of 77 distinguished leaders across the state, Dr. Murphy joins the Leadership Alabama Class of 2024-25. This elite program is known for fostering collaboration and providing leaders with unique insights into the challenges and priorities facing Alabama. Leadership Alabama seeks to equip its members with knowledge and networks that enable them to act collectively for the betterment of the state.
“Leadership Alabama encourages its members to act, individually and in concert, to move Alabama forward to help our state reach its full potential,” said Ashley Kaplan, executive director. “It’s a pleasure to have Dr. Murphy as a member of the current class. She is truly an asset.”
Dr. Murphy emphasized the importance of this opportunity, adding, “To be a part of Leadership Alabama is an incredible opportunity to learn, connect, and contribute toward a brighter future for our state. I’m honored to have the chance to work alongside such an inspiring group of leaders.”
Dr. Murphy will be formally honored at Troy University on Saturday during halftime of the Trojans’ game against Coastal Carolina University. The Distinguished Alumni Award celebrates alumni who have made exceptional contributions to their careers, communities, and the Troy University family. This year, Dr. Murphy shares the recognition with Derek Ellington, CEO of Value Creation Centrifuge; Alison Scott Wingate Hosp, Vice President of the Alabama Retail Association; and Jason Jones, owner of a medical supply company, who will be named Honorary Alumnus of the Year.
Faith Ward, Troy University’s director of Alumni Affairs, praised the honorees, stating, “It is truly an honor to recognize these members of the Troy family who, in true Trojan spirit, are making a difference through service to their communities, their careers, and Troy University. Through their accomplishments and service, they continue to represent Troy well, and we are excited to honor them in this way.”
Dr. Murphy’s connection to Troy University runs deep. She attended on a leadership scholarship and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in education. During her time at Troy, she was inducted into five honor societies and received the Outstanding Senior Award. Her education set the foundation for a distinguished four-decade career in public education, where she served as a teacher, principal, and superintendent across various Alabama school systems, and as an assistant professor at Judson College and the University of West Georgia. Dr. Murphy became president of Gadsden State Community College in January 2021.
Reflecting on the recognition from Troy, Dr. Murphy said, “Troy has a proud history of producing remarkable alumni who make a real difference in our state, country, and world. To be counted among such impactful leaders is both humbling and inspiring. This recognition is a testament to the values and commitment Troy instills in its students, and I’m grateful to carry forward that legacy at Gadsden State and in the communities we serve.”
In addition to her degree from Troy, Dr. Murphy holds a Master of Education from Auburn University at Montgomery, a Doctor of Education from Auburn University, and additional advanced degrees in educational leadership from AUM.
These recognitions reflect Dr. Murphy’s steadfast commitment to education and leadership, as well as her unwavering dedication to the communities she serves.
