eaver draws strongest field ever for this weekend’s Gene Taylor Memorial Tournament; includes Thursday results from around Calhoun County

WEAVER — A couple coaches in the field looked at the list of teams committed to wrestling in Saturday’s Gene Taylor Memorial Tournament and had basically the same thought.

One coach from the Northern part of the state told Weaver coach Andy Fulmer “it’s like a mini state tournament.”

Another one from the County said “it’s like getting us ready for the section tournament.”

Indeed. In the largest gathering of top Class 1A-4A teams outside of the sectional or state tournament, eight of last year’s top 10 at state (including the top three), nine of 10 teams in the first coaches poll of this season, eight top-ranked wrestlers in their weight class and 54 in the Top 6 of 14 weight classes will be there.

Suitably, the wrestler named Most Outstanding at the end of the day will receive a belt worthy of a world champion.

“I would say it’s one of the strongest fields we’ve had, especially since 1A-4A,” Fulmer said. “We had some pretty good 5A kids in when we were 1A-5A, but this is probably the strongest field I’ve had – especially with the recent growth in our area with some of our other programs.

“With it being a normal (non-COVID) year, I wanted to put together aa really competitive tournament and it just so happened a lot of the good competition is local people now. That worked out and we got to pull some teams from the North and South we wouldn’t see in the sectional or state.”

Top-ranked Weaver has two of the No. 1 ranked wrestlers (160 Joshua Johannson and 182 Devin Anderson) and five in the Top 6. No. 2 St. James has seven Top 6, No. 3 Ashville has six and No. 9 Deshler has five.

The Bearcats improved to 10-0 in dual matches Thursday night, nearing Ashville 43-42 on criteria and Southside 47-27.
