Calhou County, AL – Piedmont softball gets two victories in Hixson (Tenn.) High School tournament; Bulldogs, Pleasant Valley victorious in baseball

Piedmont’s softball team won its first two pool games in the Hixson High School tournament Friday. The Bulldogs beat Meigs County (Tenn.) 7-2 and Lebanon (Tenn.) 6-2 to move to 2-0 in pool play headed into their third pool game Saturday. After pool play, the field will play a single-elimination tournament on Saturday. Against Lebanon, Emma Grace Todd allowed five hits and one earned run with two walks and three strikeouts in four innings. Savannah Smith had two doubles while going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Cacey Brothers also delivered two hits and two RBIs. Sarah Goss and Cayla Brothers each had two hits and an RBI. Against Meigs County, Armoni Perry went 2-for-3 with a triple, run and two RBIs. Todd went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs. Goss and Jenna Calvert each had two hits, and Goss had an RBI. Cacey Brothers had a hit and an RBI.

RIPLEY (Miss.) 3, OHATCHEE 2: Alanah Fitch had Ohatchee’s lone hit, and Hannah Fitch had an RBI. Lexi Thomas had a solid outing in the circle, allowing five hits, one earned run and one walk with three strikeouts in four innings.

Baseball

PIEDMONT 2, ETOWAH 1: Piedmont took the lead in the top of the seventh inning, Jonah Pike led off the inning with a double. After a Cole Austin bunt plus a throwing error, Pike scored, and Austin took second base. Sloan Smith laid down a bunt single, moving Austin to third base, and Trevor Pike brought the run home with an infield single. Kale Austin and Jake Austin kept Piedmont in the game. Kale Austin spread out eight hits and allowed one earned run with three walks and three strikeouts in six innings. Jake Austin came on in relief and pitched a perfect seventh. Kale Austin went 2-for-3 at the plate, and Trevor Pike went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

PLEASANT VALLEY 8, FAITH CHRISTIAN 4: Holt Bentley drove in two runs, and Zeke Curvin, Noah Johnson and John-Garrett Bryant each drove in one as Pleasant Valley topped Faith Christian 8-4 on Friday. Curvin and Connor George each hit a double, and George scored a run. Braxton Salster and Wesley Wheeler combined to hold Faith to eight hits in seven innings. Salster worked four innings, allowing five hits, no earned runs and no walks with five strikeouts. Wheeler pitched three innings, allowing three hits, one earned run and three walks with two strikeouts. For Faith, Carson Limbaugh went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Eli Robinson went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Carson Harris had two hits.

GADSDEN CITY 5, JACKSONVILLE 4: Jacksonville rallied from a 5-1 deficit with three runs in the fifth inning and had the tying run on base in the seventh but came up short. Grant Patterson had the two-out single in the seventh and finished the day 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Bradyn Loggins went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, and Drew Pridgen was 3-for-3 with a solo home run. Jackson Bonner had a double and scored twice. Ryan Mitchell pitched six innings, allowing eight hits, three earned runs and one walk with seven strikeouts.

VESTAVIA HILLS 2, OXFORD 1: Hudson Gilman had three of Oxford’s six hits and an RBI, and Hayes Harrison hit a double and scored the Yellow Jackets’ run. Eli Bozeman, Jackson Crow and Drew McCormick combined to strike out eight batters and limit Vestavia Hills to three hits.
