JACKSONVILLE, AL – One of the most accomplished players in Jacksonville State football history is returning to his roots. Former Jax State and NFL defensive back Eric Davis has been hired as the new Director of Player Development for his alma mater, the university announced on Tuesday evening.
Davis, a native of Anniston, expressed his excitement about rejoining the program and working with the next generation of athletes. “I’m thrilled to rejoin the program and work with these talented young men,” said Davis in a statement. “Our goal is to support them in every way, helping them define their identity, pursue their dreams, and achieve success on and off the field.”
As the Director of Player Development, Davis will be responsible for guiding players both on and off the field. His role will focus on the personal growth and academic success of the team’s student-athletes, offering mentorship and providing them with the tools they need to excel at every level.
Jax State head coach Charles Kelly praised the hiring, recognizing Davis’ significant contributions to the program and his expertise. “I think it’s important for our players to have access to a player that has been here and had success at the highest level,” Kelly said. “Eric is a professional on and off the field, and I’m excited to see our players benefit from his counsel.”
Davis’ connection to Jacksonville State is deeply rooted in his impressive football career. He is a member of the Jacksonville State Hall of Fame and was part of the Division II national championship team in 1989. In addition, he earned a spot on the Gulf South Conference All-Decade Team for the 1980s and was inducted into both the Division II College Hall of Fame and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
Following his successful college career, Davis was selected in the second round of the 1990 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Over the course of his 13-year NFL career, Davis became one of the league’s top defensive backs. He earned two All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections and played a key role in the 49ers’ Super Bowl XXIX victory over the San Diego Chargers, where he recorded a second-quarter interception. Davis finished his NFL career with 38 career interceptions.
Jacksonville State will open its upcoming season with a matchup against Central Florida on Thursday, August 28. With Davis returning to the program, the Gamecocks are poised to continue their tradition of excellence on and off the field.
