Third Thursday Soothing Salves

Anniston, AL – Gardening enthusiasts and curious learners are invited to immerse themselves in the world of plants and Appalachian traditions at Longleaf Botanical Gardens this Thursday, January 18. The Third Thursday event promises a day filled with education, inspiration, and community.

From 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., visitors can explore the Plant Sale, featuring a wide variety of greenery to enhance their landscapes. Expert advice will be available from Master Gardeners and Calhoun County Extension Urban Agent Hayes Jackson, who will help attendees select plants best suited for their gardens.

Adding to the event’s charm, the special program “Soothing Salves of Appalachia” will be presented by Mandy Pearson, Program Director at Camp Lee Retreat Center. This unique session dives into the rich tradition of Appalachian folk medicine, showcasing how plants have been used to address common ailments such as stomach aches, headaches, and fevers. Participants will gain hands-on experience in crafting herbal salves using locally harvested ingredients.

Pearson emphasized the enduring value of these skills, saying, “Learning the art and science of herbal remedies connects us to a timeless tradition and highlights the healing power of nature right here in Calhoun County.”

The program, designed for informational purposes, is an opportunity to embrace a piece of Appalachian history while gaining practical knowledge.
