Jacksonville, AL – The annual Farm-City Banquet was held yesterday, bringing together community members, farmers, and city residents to celebrate the vital partnership between agriculture and urban life. Hosted by the Calhoun County Farm-City Committee, the event featured engaging speeches, award presentations, and reflections on the importance of agricultural contributions.
Dr. Eve Brantley, Extension Associate Director from Auburn University, served as the evening’s guest speaker. Dr. Brantley shared insights into the role of sustainable farming practices in ensuring a thriving agricultural future, emphasizing the critical connections between farming communities and urban centers.
The banquet also included remarks from several distinguished speakers:
- Mrs. Delle Bean, Women’s Leadership Committee Chairperson, welcomed attendees and highlighted the role of women in promoting agricultural education and community outreach.
- Mr. Jon Hegeman, President of the Calhoun County Farmers Federation, spoke on the enduring commitment of local farmers to feeding and clothing communities.
- Dr. David West, Farm-City Chairman and Calhoun County Extension Service Coordinator reflected on the history and success of the Farm-City partnership in fostering mutual support and understanding.
The celebration honored student achievements with the presentation of poster contest winners, showcasing creative depictions of this year’s Farm-City theme. Mrs. Carla Trantham added excitement to the evening by presenting door prizes to lucky attendees.
In addition to the banquet’s festivities, attendees were reminded of Alabama Farm-City Week, which takes place November 22–28, coinciding with Thanksgiving. This week celebrates the collaboration between rural and urban communities that ensures an abundant, safe food supply.
The event concluded with a reminder of the many hands involved in bringing food from farm to table, including farmers, ranchers, processors, truck drivers, retailers, and many others. Attendees were encouraged to express gratitude to those who contribute to the nation’s agricultural success, from fields to grocery aisles.
For nearly 65 years, Farm-City Week has underscored the importance of this partnership, recognizing the achievements of farmers and the industries that support them. As Dr. West remarked, “American agriculture is truly a cornerstone of our nation’s well-being, creating an extraordinary abundance that sustains us all.”
This year’s banquet was a testament to the unity and shared purpose that makes the Farm-City partnership so vital to communities both rural and urban.
