Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash Claims Life of Man on I-20 in Calhoun County

Calhoun County, AL – A multi-vehicle crash in Calhoun County late Friday night has claimed the life of a man from Villa Rica, Georgia. The incident occurred around 10:40 p.m. on October 4, when George H. Curtis, 59, was fatally injured in a collision on Interstate 20 near the 191-mile marker, approximately three miles east of Oxford.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Curtis was driving a 2005 Honda Accord when his vehicle was first struck by a 2023 Freightliner tractor-trailer, driven by Bruno Fernandes, 44, of Deerfield Beach, Florida. The impact caused Curtis’s Honda to become disabled. Shortly thereafter, the Honda was hit by a 2023 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by Robert C. Gilbert, 39, of Deatsville, Alabama.

Following the second collision, both the Honda and the Volvo left the roadway and caught fire. Curtis was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division are actively investigating the crash, and no further details are available at this time.
