Traffic Fatality in Calhoun County

Calhoun County, AL – A tragic single-vehicle crash in Calhoun County, Alabama, claimed the life of a Heflin man on Wednesday, Feb. 28. The incident occurred at approximately 6:24 p.m. and involved a pedestrian, identified as 42-year-old Johnathan S. Smith.

According to the preliminary investigation conducted by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division, Smith was fatally injured when he was struck by a 2015 Ford Explorer. The vehicle was being driven by 35-year-old Kayla R. Wells, a resident of Anniston.

The crash took place on Bynum Leatherwood Road near Winchester Road, approximately three miles from the Anniston city limits. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene, however; Smith was pronounced deceased upon their arrival.

The circumstances leading up to the incident are currently under investigation by the ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division. Troopers are working to determine the sequence of events and factors that may have contributed to the collision. As of now, no further details have been released regarding the cause of the crash.
