Weaver opens its season by sweeping Ashville, second half play key to both games
ASHVILLE — Weaver opened its basketball season with a doubleheader sweep of Ashville.
The boys used a big second half to win 64-45, while the girls survived a fourth-quarter flurry to win 42-39 and give coach Gary Atchley a victory in his first game back on the bench.
Sophomores Dawson Brooks and Tristan Brown combined for 27 points in the second half as Weaver’s boys pulled away from a close game.
Brooks scored a game-high 24 points. He had 15 points in the second half, 10 in the fourth quarter. Brown scored 12 of his 16 in the second half.
Ashville led 20-19 at halftime.
In the girls game, sophomore Erionna Richmond and freshman D.J. Gibbs combined for 22 points in the second half to help the Lady Bearcats without Ashville’s’ parade to the free throw line in the fourth quarter. [**read more]
