Gadsden State Celebrates 100 Years of Excellence and Impact

Gadsden, AL — Gadsden State Community College is marking a century of service, education, and transformation with its yearlong “Celebrate Gadsden State” campaign. Established in 1925 as the Alabama School of Trades—the South’s first state-operated trade school—Gadsden State has grown into a comprehensive community college with a legacy built on innovation, inclusion, and opportunity.

From its early beginnings to its current role as a regional leader in higher education, Gadsden State’s journey reflects a deep commitment to academic excellence and community advancement. The centennial celebration not only honors this rich history but also looks ahead to a future of continued impact.

  • Alabama School of Trades (1925): The first of its kind in the South, this institution laid the groundwork for technical education in Alabama, offering vital skills training to generations of students.

  • Gadsden Vocational Trade School (1960): Founded by Eugene N. Prater to provide vocational training for African American students during segregation, the school was later renamed Gadsden State Technical Institute and designated a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in 1997.

  • Gadsden State Junior College (1965): Created by the Alabama State Legislature to offer professional and technical programs, broadening educational access across the region.

  • Harry M. Ayers State Technical College (1963): Founded to provide advanced technical education, later merging with Gadsden State in 2003 to further unify regional educational offerings.

Together, these institutions formed the present-day Gadsden State Community College, which now serves thousands of students across its East Broad, Valley Street, Wallace Drive, Ayers, and Cherokee campuses.

Gadsden State’s 100th anniversary will be commemorated through a series of special events highlighting each campus and its contributions:

  • June: Ayers Campus Celebration

  • July: Valley Street Campus Celebration

  • August: Cherokee Campus Celebration

  • September: East Broad Campus Celebration

  • October: Cardinal Gala at The Venue

Each event is designed to showcase Gadsden State’s lasting impact on students, alumni, and the community at large.

As the college celebrates this historic milestone, its leadership remains focused on the future—preparing students for successful careers and continued learning in an ever-evolving world.
