Gadsden, AL – Gadsden State Community College’s Theatre Department is set to hold auditions for the upcoming production of Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy, “The Importance of Being Earnest.” Auditions will take place at 6 p.m. on January 6 and 7 at the College’s Black Box Theatre, located in the former Meadows Library on the Wallace Drive Campus. Callbacks are scheduled for 6 p.m. on January 8, with performances planned for March 6-8 and 13-15.
This beloved play is renowned for its sharp wit and satirical take on Victorian society. It follows Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, two men who lead double lives to navigate societal conventions. Their escapades lead to a series of humorous misunderstandings and romantic entanglements.
In addition to the lead roles of Jack and Algernon, other characters include:
• Gwendolen Fairfax: A fashionable young woman engaged to Jack, who insists on marrying only a man named Ernest.
• Cecily Cardew: Jack’s ward, who becomes enamored with the idea of marrying a man named Ernest.
• Lady Bracknell: Gwendolen’s formidable mother, representing Victorian societal norms.
• Miss Prism: Cecily’s kind-hearted governess with a mysterious past.
• Rev. Canon Chasuble: A shy clergyman involved in the romantic comedy.
Auditions are open to all community members, regardless of prior experience. Participants should prepare a one- to two-minute comedic monologue or read from the script.
“I’m excited to bring Oscar Wilde’s brilliant characters to life,” said Joe Fuselli, the play’s director. “This play is timeless, combining humor with insightful commentary on love, identity, and class.”
