Gadsden, AL – The Gadsden State Community College Police and Public Safety Department will host its first-ever Basic Civilian Firearm Training course on Saturday, December 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Beck Conference Center on the Wallace Drive Campus. This free, day-long course is open to individuals 18 and older and aims to enhance confidence, situational awareness, and self-defense skills among participants.

“At Gadsden State, we are dedicated to empowering our community with the knowledge and skills necessary to keep themselves and their loved ones safe,” said Gadsden State Police Chief Jay Freeman. “Our inaugural Civilian Basic Firearms Class offers citizens the chance to acquire essential skills in firearm safety, understand the legal responsibilities of ownership, and learn practical steps to protect their families—especially as we approach the busy holiday season. Our goal is to provide valuable and responsible training that boosts confidence and enhances a sense of security within our community.”

Led by firearm-certified instructors, the training covers topics such as the basics of pistol shooting, types of firearms, firearm safety protocols, situational awareness, and legal considerations. The course schedule includes a morning classroom session from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., followed by hands-on shooting range practice from noon to 2 p.m.

Participants must come prepared with a functioning handgun, a proper holster, 50 rounds of ammunition, eye and ear protection, and a willingness to learn essential firearm safety. The Beck Conference Center, located at 203 College Drive on the Wallace Drive Campus, will host the initial classroom session.

Through programs like this, Gadsden State’s Police and Public Safety Department is dedicated to enhancing safety, knowledge, and preparedness within the community.
