Gadsden State, ACCS team up to offer free fire training

Gadsden, AL – Gadsden State Community College, in collaboration with the Alabama Community College System (ACCS), is set to host a series of comprehensive training sessions focused on fire extinguisher and fire safety. The initiative aims to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills to effectively respond to fire emergencies and ensure personal safety.

The free training sessions will be held on May 31, offering three separate two-hour slots at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., and 1 p.m. The venue for the training is room 213 in Helderman Hall on the Wallace Drive Campus. The practical aspect of the training will take place in the front parking lot of Helderman Hall.

The curriculum of the training encompasses a wide range of topics crucial for fire safety preparedness. The agenda includes a detailed exploration of the science of fire, understanding fire components, types of fires and fuels, as well as identification and proper use of fire extinguishers. Participants will also learn about the principles of fire evacuation and essential personal safety measures during fire emergencies.

The training will be divided into two-hour sessions. The first hour will consist of a PowerPoint presentation and discussions covering various aspects of fire safety. This will include rules for effectively utilizing fire extinguishers, principles of fire evacuation, and personal safety measures.

The second hour will focus on hands-on training and extinguisher deployment. Participants will engage in practical exercises such as extinguishing live fires using training pans and live materials. The training will simulate fire extinguishing operations, both individually and as part of a team.

Christopher Martin, from the ACCS Public Safety Division, will lead the training sessions. Completion of the training will entitle participants to receive certificates from both the ACCS Public Safety Division and the Alabama Fire College.

Safety measures will be strictly adhered to during the hands-on training, with participants required to wear provided safety equipment. Live fires will be extinguished in a controlled environment using designated training burn pans and materials.

Given the practical nature of the training, each session is limited to 20 participants. Registration is mandatory, and interested individuals can secure their spot by contacting Emily Feemster of the Gadsden State Police and Public Safety Department at [email protected] or by calling 256-549-8611.

This initiative underscores Gadsden State Community College’s commitment to promoting safety awareness and preparedness within the community, ensuring individuals are equipped with the necessary skills to respond effectively to fire emergencies.
