Gadsden, Alabama – In a public announcement yesterday, Gadsden State Community College President Kathy Murphy revealed plans for a significant renovation of the Wallace Hall Fine Arts Center and academic wing. With a vision to provide state-of-the-art facilities for employees, students, and the community, the renovation is set to transform the iconic institution into a modern hub of creativity and learning.
“We are excited about this occasion,” Murphy declared. “We are making history today. We are making sure that our employees, our students, and our community have the facility they deserve.”
The ambitious project comes with a price tag of nearly $7.9 million. The academic wing will undergo a complete overhaul, including the renovation of classrooms and studio spaces for photography, pottery, visual arts, choral, and band courses. Additionally, upgrades to the computer lab, restrooms, interior sheetrock walls, doors, flooring, and paint throughout the building are planned. The renovation will also include the installation of entirely new electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
Exterior enhancements are also on the agenda, featuring an updated brick and precast façade, a newly paved courtyard with lighting, and a redesigned front entry to both the Fine Arts Center and academic wing. All-new windows will complete the exterior renovations.
Mario Gallardo, Chairman of the Fine Arts Division at Gadsden State, emphasized the significance of Wallace Hall as more than just a building. “It is the epicenter for creativity and celebration of the arts at Gadsden State and for the community of northeast Alabama,” he stated. Gallardo highlighted the role of Wallace Hall in connecting the community with Gadsden State, serving as a space for bringing people together and fostering empathy.
Funding for the project was secured through a bond approved by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees in November. The same bond is also financing the construction of a new baseball/softball complex, with groundbreaking already underway as of April 2. Lathan Associates of Hoover is serving as the architectural firm for the Wallace Hall renovations, while Hudak Construction Co. of Gadsden is the contractor. Demolition is currently in progress, with the renovation expected to be completed by next summer.
Ryan Kelly, a passionate theater student, shares his unexpected journey into the arts and the profound impact they’ve had on his life. Reflecting on his fortuitous entry into theater auditions five years ago at Southside High School, Ryan recalls how a friend’s insistence led him to nervously audition with “Happy Birthday” and ultimately secure a role that, while not significant, proved to be life-changing. Recognizing the vital role the arts, particularly theater, play in his life, Ryan acknowledges that without them, his life would feel incomplete. Embracing his newfound passion, Ryan has expanded his artistic pursuits into visual arts, particularly photography, under the guidance of Mr. Curtis. Despite uncertainties about the future, Ryan expresses optimism about the potential expansion of Wallace Hall and his continued involvement in the arts department, underscoring his dedication to his artistic journey.
Wallace Hall has a rich history dating back to its construction in 1967 for $1.5 million. Over the years, it has undergone several renovations and upgrades to maintain its status as a premier cultural and educational venue in the region. When operating at full capacity, the Fine Arts Center attracts approximately 40,000 visitors per year, hosting a diverse array of events ranging from plays and concerts to graduation ceremonies and community gatherings.
