Gadsden, AL – Gadsden State Community College is recognizing four of its distinguished employees as 2025 recipients of the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) Chancellor’s Awards. Presented annually, the awards highlight excellence in leadership, teaching, service, and support across Alabama’s community colleges. This year’s honorees were celebrated for their commitment to students, colleagues, and the campus community.
“We are fortunate to have so many exceptional faculty and staff who generously share their time, talents, and dedication to enrich the lives of our students and enhance their educational experience,” said Dr. Tera Simmons, executive vice president.
The awards were presented on November 23 during the Alabama Community College Association Conference in Montgomery.
Chancellor’s Award for Administrator: Ricky Tillis
Ricky Tillis, director of Gadsden State’s Valley Street Campus, received the 2025 Chancellor’s Award for Administrator. A former student of the Valley Street Campus, Tillis is recognized for his leadership marked by humility, integrity, and a student-centered approach.
He coordinates major campus outreach efforts and annual events, including the Tailgate Celebration and Black History Program. Colleagues describe him as a dedicated problem solver who exceeds expectations in supporting both students and staff.
Reflecting on his role, Tillis said he strives to “maintain a culture of excellence, be mission-focused, and provide altruistic leadership with a community approach toward transformation.”
Chancellor’s Award for Academic Faculty: Beth McGlaughn
Beth McGlaughn, coordinator and instructor of the Paralegal Program, earned the 2025 Chancellor’s Award for Academic Faculty. Holding degrees from Birmingham-Southern College and The University of Alabama School of Law, she brings extensive legal experience into the classroom.
McGlaughn is known for fostering a research-driven, interactive learning environment. Her initiatives include establishing a professional clothing closet for students and securing a transfer agreement with Samford University, which expands pathways to advanced legal studies.
“What I love most is working with the students,” McGlaughn said. “Each one brings unique experiences and goals, and it is a joy to help them pursue careers in the legal profession.”
Chancellor’s Award for Technical Faculty: Dr. Evelyn Lightsey
Dr. Evelyn Lightsey, Simulation Coordinator for the Nursing Division, received the 2025 Chancellor’s Award for Technical Faculty. Since joining Gadsden State in 2007, she has become a leader in simulation-based nursing education.
Her credentials include a BSN from Jacksonville State University, an MSN from UAB, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Samford University. She also holds certifications as both a nurse educator and health care simulation educator.
Colleagues and former students praised her for her dedication and compassion. One nominator noted that she “has touched the lives of countless students,” while a past student shared that Lightsey provided essential tutoring outside regular class hours.
Lightsey said she enjoys “helping students put the pieces of the puzzle together through simulation-based learning experiences” and values the college’s close-knit community.
Chancellor’s Award for Support Staff: Efferson Ellis, Jr.
Efferson Ellis Jr., a longtime security officer with more than 16 years of service, was honored with the 2025 Chancellor’s Award for Support Staff.
Ellis is known for his professionalism, steady presence, and supportive demeanor. Colleagues describe him as reliable, honest, and warm-hearted. A faculty member said, “His presence brings a sense of security; we feel safe under his watch,” while a student noted that he “brings a sense of safety and calm wherever he is.”
Ellis said he enjoys meeting new students, ensuring their safety, and working among colleagues who feel like family.
