Gadsden State hosting Campus Cleanup Days

Gadsden, AL – Gadsden State Community College is once again rolling up its sleeves for its annual Campus Cleanup Days, an initiative organized by the Office of Student Life as part of Community College Month. This event invites students, employees, alumni, and community supporters to come together to make the campuses and surrounding areas cleaner and greener.

“We’re excited to celebrate Community College Month by engaging our campus and community members in meaningful ways,” said Lynn Patterson, director of Student Life and organizer of the cleanup campaign. “This campaign fosters a sense of pride and unity while also reminding us of the importance of environmental stewardship. By working together, we’re helping to create a cleaner, welcoming environment for everyone.”

Event Schedule and Details

Application

The Campus Cleanup Days will take place across multiple Gadsden State campuses:

  • Wallace Drive and East Broad Campuses – April 2 at 10 a.m. Volunteers should meet at the Beck Conference Center to sign waivers and receive supplies. Cleanup efforts will continue until 3 p.m., when participants will return for trash drop-off, pizza, and door prizes.
  • Gadsden State Cherokee (Centre, AL) – April 7 at 10 a.m. Volunteers can pick up waivers and supplies in the Admissions Office and will conclude their efforts by 3 p.m., dropping off trash at the back steps of the education building. This cleanup will also include public areas in Centre.
  • Valley Street Campus – April 15. Those interested in participating should contact Ricky Tillis, campus director, for more details.

Gadsden State’s cleanup efforts have gained statewide recognition. For two consecutive years, the initiative has been honored by Alabama People Against a Littered State (PALS) and Coca-Cola UNITED for its impact. During the annual PALS Governor’s Awards Ceremony in November, Gadsden State was acknowledged for hosting the most successful cleanup campaign among Alabama’s community colleges. Last year alone, volunteers collected nearly 8,000 pounds of litter, earning the campaign a $1,000 Campus Cleanup Scholarship.

As Gadsden State continues to champion environmental responsibility, the Campus Cleanup Days serve as an opportunity for students and the community to give back while reinforcing the value of a clean and welcoming campus environment.
