Gadsden State Launches First-of-Its-Kind Chaplain Program to Support Campus Community

Gadsden State Police Department Launches Chaplain Program

GADSDEN, AL – Gadsden State Community College is taking a groundbreaking step in promoting wellness and support across its campuses with the official launch of its new Chaplain Program, a pioneering initiative led by the college’s Police/Public Safety Department.

This program, among the first of its kind at a community college in Alabama, introduces a team of volunteer chaplains trained specifically in law enforcement chaplaincy. The group will offer vital emotional and spiritual support to public safety officers, staff, and students across all five Gadsden State campuses.

“This chaplain program is about people—offering compassion, comfort, and emotional support,” said Chief Jay Freeman of the Gadsden State Police Department. “In law enforcement, we encounter difficult situations. Our officers, employees, and students face challenges, and we want to ensure they know they’re not alone. This program is here for them—no matter the situation.”

The Chaplain Program aims to foster a more connected and resilient campus community by being a consistent resource in times of crisis, need, or everyday interaction. A formal swearing-in ceremony for the inaugural chaplain team was held on Monday, April 21 at the Gadsden State Police Department, with family and friends in attendance.

The chaplaincy team features five respected community leaders who bring a broad range of life experiences and faith backgrounds:

  • Gary Cardwell, Lead Pastor of Black Creek Church

  • Tracy Griggs, Campus Minister at the Etowah Baptist Association

  • Robby Davis, Youth Director and Associate Pastor at Cross Creek Community Church

  • Steven Fraizer, Lead Pastor of Riverbend Baptist Church

  • Joe Simmons, Pastor at New Liberty Tabernacle of Praise

These chaplains will be available to provide care in response to critical incidents, student crises, or simply as an encouraging presence on campus. The team is not only prepared to support individuals in distress but also to engage proactively with the college community to build lasting relationships.

Chief Freeman emphasized that the program’s success is largely due to the support of Dr. Kathy Murphy, President of Gadsden State. “This place will be better for it,” he said. “We’re grateful to Dr. Murphy for believing in this program from the beginning.”

As the program develops, the department envisions expanding the chaplains’ role even further to ensure every corner of campus life benefits from their presence.

“We always want to be prepared for any and all events,” Freeman added. “We’re not just preparing to respond—we’re preparing to support one another.”

The launch of the Chaplain Program marks a significant milestone in Gadsden State’s ongoing efforts to prioritize the mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of its college community.
