Gadsden, AL — Students and instructors from Gadsden State Community College’s Radiography Program made a lasting impression at the 77th Annual Conference of the Alabama Society of Radiologic Technologists (ALSRT), held April 4-6 in Orange Beach. The annual event brought together professional radiographers and students from across the state for a weekend of learning, collaboration, and competition.
Gadsden State achieved a significant milestone this year by winning the coveted Student Bowl, a statewide academic competition designed to promote excellence and knowledge in the field of radiologic technology. This marked the first time the college’s team captured the championship, competing against five other institutions from across Alabama. It was only the second year Gadsden State had participated in the event.
“It’s exciting to bring the championship trophy back to Gadsden,” said Ashley Crusey, Radiography Program director and instructor. “We are all incredibly proud of our students. This victory is a testament to their hard work and dedication. Our team worked together to come out on top.”
The winning team included students Alissa Grebb, Kerry Walsh, Maddie Oaks, and Raven Maddox. Also attending the conference were radiography students Alyson Gault, Rachel McCleese, and Shelby Taylor.
Beyond the excitement of the Student Bowl, the ALSRT conference offered a wealth of educational opportunities. Students participated in exam review sessions designed to boost their preparation for board certification—a vital step in becoming licensed radiologic technologists.
“Students attended exam review sessions designed to enhance their readiness for board exams,” Crusey said. “It’s all part of helping them take the next step in their professional journey.”
Instructors from Gadsden State also contributed to the professional development offerings at the conference. Clinical coordinator Autumn Hardeman gave a presentation focused on digital imaging, while Crusey presented on radiation protection—two critical topics in the field of radiology.
“We take pride in the development and success of our students, and the conference is a fantastic way for them to gain knowledge, prepare for exams and network with professionals in the field,” said Hardeman. “Seeing our students compete and succeed on the state level truly reinforces the quality of education we provide at Gadsden State.”
The annual ALSRT conference not only supports student education but also serves as a platform for professional radiographers to earn continuing education credits, ensuring they remain current with best practices and technological advancements in the field.
Gadsden State’s success at this year’s conference reflects the strength and dedication of its Radiography Program and the commitment of its students and faculty to academic excellence and professional growth.
