Gadsden, AL – Gadsden State Community College standout Keshawn Watkins has been named the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Division I Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 27. The freshman guard/forward earned the honor following his dominant performance in the Cardinals’ 86-82 victory over Shelton State Community College, where he recorded a double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds.
“The freshman guard/forward’s all-around dominance on both ends of the floor played a key role in the team’s success,” said Gadsden State Head Coach Deddric Tarver. Watkins currently averages 15 points and 9 rebounds per game, making him one of the Cardinals’ top contributors. His recognition marks the second time a Gadsden State player has earned Player of the Week honors this season, following teammate Giovanni Nannucci’s accolade in November.
“Keshawn is a very quiet person who makes a lot of noise with his play on the court,” Tarver said. “I love his passion for the game. He works hard every day, and it’s paying off. He is the type of player who shows up when it matters most, and we’re really proud of him.”
A product of Lee-Huntsville High School, Watkins has already drawn attention from several four-year universities interested in recruiting him for the next level. Tarver credits Watkins’ work ethic and commitment to improvement as key factors in his success.
“We’re excited for Keshawn’s future,” he said. “He has a bright road ahead of him, and this recognition is just the beginning. We are proud to have him as part of the Cardinals family, and we can’t wait to see what else he accomplishes this season.”
Watkins and the Gadsden State Cardinals will face Lawson State Community College at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Beck Gymnasium on the Wallace Drive Campus. The matchup will also serve as Sophomore Night, where coaches and administrators will recognize student-athletes playing their final year at Gadsden State.
“Sophomore Night is a time for us to honor the hard work, dedication, and growth our sophomores have shown over the past two seasons,” Tarver said. “They have truly contributed to our team and have built a strong foundation for the future of our program. We are proud of all they’ve accomplished.”
The Cardinals currently hold a 15-6 record for the season. For more information about Gadsden State Athletics, visit GoCardinals.GadsdenState.edu.
