Gadsden, AL – Gadsden State Community College’s Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program has recently relocated to a more accessible and improved facility in the basement of Naylor Hall on the Wallace Drive Campus. This move enhances the support services available to local veterans, reinforcing the program’s commitment to helping former service members transition to civilian life.
Previously housed in a smaller space in Beck Field House, the new location offers expanded facilities and a more veteran-friendly environment tailored to meet participants’ needs. The transition to Naylor Hall reflects the program’s ongoing efforts to provide high-quality resources and assistance to veterans.
“The improvements represent our commitment to providing the best possible support to our veterans,” said Sarah Aultman, director of VUB. “After all, our goal is to assist veterans in a seamless transition from military service to civilian life.”
VUB, a federally funded TRIO program, offers free services to eligible veterans, including assistance with educational benefits, academic preparation, computer skills training, financial management education, and enrollment guidance at the school of their choice. Additionally, participating veterans may qualify for a monthly stipend by engaging in educational activities through the program.
The new VUB space was previously occupied by the Alabama Language Institute, which has since moved to Allen Hall. The updated facility now features several key improvements, such as a newly resurfaced ADA-accessible ramp for easy entry, renovated accessible bathrooms, and designated “Veterans Only” parking spaces directly in front of the VUB office door. The new office also boasts a computer lab, a dedicated quiet study area, and a meeting room designed to foster collaboration with community partners.
“The new space is not only more accessible, but it also creates a better environment for veterans to focus on their studies, access resources, and connect with important community and college partners,” Aultman said. “We want to ensure that our veterans have the resources they need to succeed.”
Beyond physical improvements, VUB is also expanding its online Veterans Resource Guide, a central hub of information for veterans and community members. This guide includes resources on education, housing, legal services, and mental health support.
“We encounter so many wonderful organizations and resources in our work,” Aultman said. “This expanded guide is a central place where veterans and community members can easily access information related to the needs they might have. We hope this will empower our veterans to succeed and build stronger connections with positive resources.”
The relocation and enhancements to the VUB program at Gadsden State underscore the college’s dedication to providing comprehensive support to those who have bravely served the country.
