On Thursday afternoon the City of Gadsden Police Department received a report of a stolen vehicle from local car rental company. The suspect allegedly took a vehicle that had keys inside and drove the vehicle off the lot. The rental company had GPS trackers installed on the stolen vehicle and was able to tell Gadsden Officers the general location of the vehicle, which was currently in Calhoun County. Gadsden PD contacted investigators at the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office at just before 4:00 pm and provided them with the area the vehicle was believed to be in.

Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office Investigators immediately responded to the area and located the vehicle on Parkwood Drive. The occupant of the vehicle was speaking to another person and fled upon site of the investigator. The investigator detained the other person and requested assistance from other deputies and investigators to assist with locating the fleeing vehicle. Arriving backup was given the new GPS location and began a search of the area. One of the deputies knew the Parkwood area and recalled a spot where a lot of people like to try and hide. As he proceeded to that area he located the still occupied vehicle  and approached it. The driver attempted to get away again and during his attempt to elude law enforcement he struck one of the Sheriff’s Office vehicles which left the vehicle disabled. The suspect, Joshua Colson, was then taken into custody without further incident. None of the deputies or investigators were seriously injured from the crash. It was later determined that the second person the investigator stopped at the scene was not involved and was subsequently released.

Captain Joey Stone of the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office advised that Colson was transported to the Calhoun County Jail where he is charged with Attempted Assault 1st and Attempt to Elude. He will also face additional charges in the City of Gadsden for the theft of the vehicle.
