Eastaboga, AL — Gary Lenn Sparks, a longtime public servant and current Oxford Fire Chief, has officially announced his candidacy for Calhoun County Commissioner in District 3. The seat was previously held by Eli Henderson and is currently occupied by Carolyn Henderson. Sparks emphasized that he would not have considered running if Carolyn Henderson had decided to seek another term.
“I’ve served the public my entire life, and I believe I have something meaningful to offer both the commission and the residents of District 3,” said Sparks. “I want to continue serving my community, and I see this as the right opportunity.”
Sparks said public safety is one of his top priorities, particularly ensuring that departments are properly funded and supported. He also voiced concern over ongoing issues with local EMS services. “There are real problems that we need to address head-on to make sure our citizens get the emergency services they need,” he said.
Another key area of focus for Sparks is infrastructure. He noted that roads and bridges across the district are in need of attention and investment. Sparks also believes that Janney Furnace, a historic site in the county, should continue to be maintained and promoted. “It’s a valuable part of our history and can continue to be a source of education and pride,” he said.
He also sees great potential in Woodland Park, suggesting it could be better developed as a draw for tourism and outdoor recreation in the area. This is especially important because the County has purchased and now owns this property.
Sparks brings a lifetime of public service and civic engagement to the table. He has served in numerous volunteer, coaching, and leadership roles, including President of the Alabama Association of Fire Chiefs and Chairman of the Calhoun County 911 Commission. His professional career spans both the Anniston and Oxford Fire Departments, where he rose through the ranks and has served as Oxford’s full-time Fire Chief since 2007. Sparks stated that he has no plans to step down from his position as Oxford Fire Chief.
A resident of Eastaboga, Sparks is married to Monica Tankersley of Saks. They have one son, Robert, a graduate of Oxford High School, who is married to Meaghen McCracken. The couple has two children, McKenna and Conor.
Sparks is an active deacon and member of Brookside Baptist Church and has been involved in a wide array of local organizations ranging from youth sports leagues to the Oxford Education Foundation and United Way Board of Directors.
“As someone who has worked in the field and in leadership, I know how to make things happen. I’m ready to work for the people of District 3,” Sparks said.
The election for Calhoun County Commissioner District 3 will take place in 2026.
