Montgomery, AL – Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded approximately $43.8 million in grants to help low-income households across Alabama cover home heating and cooling costs during the winter and summer months.
The funding will be distributed through 18 community action agencies statewide to provide emergency assistance for residents facing high energy costs. The grants support the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which is administered locally by community action agencies that accept and process applications from eligible individuals.
“The cost of heating a home during the coldest parts of winter and cooling it during the hottest parts of summer can pose a challenge for those who are most vulnerable and have extremely limited incomes,” Ivey said. “These grants will ensure that help is available to those who need it most during extreme weather.”
The grants are being administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) using funds provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The allocation includes both regular LIHEAP funding and supplemental resources made available through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said the program is designed to assist residents with the greatest need. “This program is meant to help people who have the lowest income and those who are most vulnerable, including the elderly, people with disabilities and young children,” Boswell said. “ADECA stands with Gov. Ivey in supporting Alabamians who are in need of this emergency assistance.”
While funding has been awarded, officials noted that assistance may not be immediately available in all areas. Application periods and distribution timelines are determined locally by each participating community action agency.
