Governor Ivey Announces Free File Program for Eligible Alabama Taxpayers

Montgomery, AL – Alabama taxpayers with a qualifying 2024 adjusted gross income can now prepare and file their state and federal income tax returns online for free through the Alabama Free File and IRS Free File programs.

The initiative, powered by the Free File Alliance—a coalition of tax software companies in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)—and the Alabama Department of Revenue (ALDOR), provides eligible taxpayers with secure access to step-by-step tax preparation software at no cost.

Governor Kay Ivey highlighted the program’s benefits, stating, “Free File is now available in Alabama to help eligible taxpayers take the guesswork out of completing state and federal tax returns. With step-by-step help to get tax returns done quickly, safely, and for free, this is a great way to meet income tax filing obligations and help move Alabama forward.”

How to Access Free File

Taxpayers can access Free File services through desktop and laptop computers, as well as mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets. There are two ways to access the program on mobile:

  • Using the IRS2Go app, which provides a direct link to the Free File Software Lookup Tool.
  • Visiting www.IRS.gov/freefile through a mobile browser.

The IRS2Go app is available for Android and iOS devices.

ALDOR and the Free File Alliance prioritize protecting taxpayers’ personal information through enhanced security measures. The Free File Alliance, in collaboration with the IRS, state tax agencies, and other industry partners, actively participates in the IRS Security Summit to strengthen identity theft safeguards for tax filers.
