MONTGOMERY, AL — Governor Kay Ivey announced Tuesday the appointment of Judge Bill Lewis to the Supreme Court of Alabama, filling a vacancy created by the resignation of Justice Jay Mitchell, who stepped down from the bench earlier this week.
“Judge Bill Lewis continues demonstrating justice and fairness under the law, as well as a willingness to serve the people of Alabama,” Governor Ivey said in a public statement. “His decades of experience will serve the Supreme Court of Alabama well, and I am confident he is the best choice.”
Judge Lewis brings an extensive legal background to the state’s highest court. Most recently, he was appointed by Governor Ivey to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals in February 2024. Prior to his appellate role, he served as a circuit judge for the 19th Judicial Circuit, based in Elmore County, where he held the position of presiding judge.
His legal career spans both public service and private practice. Lewis began as an assistant district attorney for the 19th Judicial Circuit before founding the Lewis Law Firm in 2006, where he worked as a senior partner. Over the years, he has represented clients in a range of cases, including criminal defense, civil litigation, and family law.
Lewis holds dual undergraduate degrees in political science and economics from the University of the South and earned his Juris Doctor from the Cumberland School of Law.
The governor spoke directly with Judge Lewis Tuesday morning to notify him of the appointment. His tenure on the Supreme Court of Alabama begins immediately.
Governor Ivey also indicated that an announcement will soon follow regarding her selection to fill the now-vacant seat on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals.
