MONTGOMERY, AL — Governor Kay Ivey is encouraging Alabamians to participate in the national “Light to Unite”campaign as the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
The statewide observance, designated as Light to Unite Week, runs from July 1 through July 8, 2026. During the week, residents, businesses and government entities are encouraged to illuminate buildings and homes in red, white and blue and display the American flag.
According to the governor’s office, the campaign is intended to recognize the nation’s 250-year history and encourage public participation through patriotic displays.
“This July 4 marks a very special and historic anniversary for our Republic and the cause of liberty,” Governor Ivey said in a statement. “We celebrate 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of our great country.”
The Light to Unite initiative was launched by the National Flag Foundation as a nationwide campaign. Governor Ivey proclaimed Light to Unite Week in Alabama, joined by Sen. Arthur Orr, chairman of the Alabama Semiquincentennial Commission.
“As we prepare to commemorate 250 years of American independence, this initiative offers a fitting tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who built and defended our nation,” Orr said. “By lighting our homes and communities in red, white and blue, Alabamians can come together in a visible show of unity in celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary.”
The campaign coincides with the week in American history during which the Continental Congress debated and voted for independence, adopted the Declaration of Independence and publicly presented the document.
In conjunction with the anniversary, Governor Ivey also announced that Alabama will host an America 250 Alabama Celebration at the State Capitol on May 21, 2026. The event will include the unveiling of a commemorative 250th edition U.S. flag to be displayed between the Capitol’s columns, a musical performance by Randy Owen of Alabama and a flyover by four F-35 fighter jets. The event will be free and open to the public.
